Flight Lieutenant Peter Campbell and Leading Aircraftman Ted Bates (RCAF) went missing on December 13, 1940, when their aircraft, Northrop A-17 Nomad 3521, was involved in a mid-air collision with another aircraft, Nomad 3512, over Lake Muskoka. Both aircraft were searching for a fellow airman who had gone missing during training the day before. Following the crash, only Nomad 3512 and its pilot and co-pilot were located. The Nomad 3521, with Flight Lieutenant Campbell and Leading Aircraftsman Bates onboard, remained missing for nearly 72 years.
The remains of the airmen were located and recovered by members of the Royal Canadian Navy's Fleet Diving Unit (Atlantic) during a dive to the aircraft wreckage in Lake Muskoka in October 2012.
Flt Lt Campbell, from East Preston, West Sussex, came to Canada in 1940 as part of the successful Empire Air Training Scheme to train pilots from the Commonwealth countries and other allies for the aerial conflict of the Second World War. He had been here only a few weeks when he and LAC Bates took off from the RCAF base in Borden to search for the missing plane.
Flight Lieutenant Campbell and Leading Aircraftman Bates were laid to rest with full military honours in an interment ceremony on September 17, 2013.
